Have you ever heard of Axolotls? They are salamanders that live in underwater caves! Axolotls never mature, staying “babies” their entire lives. They can regrow limbs and parts of their brain and heart. They can be gold, brown, and even blue, and their most prominent feature is their external gills. Axolotls are interesting creatures.
Axolotls live in a cave located in Lake Xochimilo in Mexico City. Because of pollution and invasive species, their population is dwindling. They are named after the Aztec god, Xolotl. It is said that the god, Xololtl, could turn into a salamander. He was sentenced to eternal darkness as a water monster. Axolotl’s name means “water monster”.
Axolotls can be pets. They will live up to 15 years as pets, but in the wild they will only live up to 5 or 6 years. They are often bred to be a pet and are a favorite to many. Because they are being bred, this may help them from extinction. To have one as a pet, you will need to keep them in an aquarium. They are low maintenance and eat practically anything they can fit in their mouth, including other salamanders!
