Volleyball is a game played by two teams of six players each. An inflated ball is hit over a high net by the players with their hands. Each team tries to make the ball touch the court on the opposite team's side to score a point. A team is allowed to touch the ball three times before hitting it to the other team. Volleyball was first played in the United States in 1895 at the YMCA Gym in Massachusetts.
A team has six players on the court at a time who all have their own positions with their own jobs. The positions are : outside hitter, opposite setter, middle blocker, defensive specialist and serving specialist. Each player has their own responsibility and role on the court. The team that works the best together will be the winner. Volleyball is a team sport and cannot be won by a single player.
Volleyball can be played in many different places. Volleyball can be played inside of a gym, on a beach, in a park, or anywhere that a net can be set up. Volleyball is played by people of many different ages. Volleyball can be played by kids, high school, college, and there are even professional players. Also, volleyball is a very popular sport in the Olympic Games. Today there are 800 million players worldwide and 37 million of these players are in the U.S.
