Humpback whales are a unique part of the ocean's ecosystem. They are a vertebrate classified as a mammal because like dolphins, they breathe air with their special holes on their head called a blowhole. This helps them breathe underwater for a while, but because they are mammals, and it is essential for them to breathe air, so they will need to come to the ocean’s surface to get the air that they need. Humpback whales migrate to cooler waters in the winter to find food. They get it by opening their gigantic mouths and they catch food when the fish get sucked in, then they swallow and get their delicious lunch. They are baleen whales which means that they have hair like teeth that keeps the fish in their mouth, but that is not the only thing they are, these whales are also carnivores because they eat meat. Female humpbacks are about 49-52ft long and males are about 43-46ft long. They live about 45-50 years long. Lastly these incredible ocean animals are luckily not endangered. However, that can change if humans hunt them for food, not throw away trash, or pollute the ocean, and not only will that affect humpback whales but a lot of other ocean animals too. For now, let's give it up for these extraordinary Humpback whales!
