Do you have a friend that is struggling in spelling and reading or maybe just has a hard time understanding what you say? If you try helping them with spelling or reading, do they need words or sentences repeated? You try again; they still don’t understand you . When you realize you are struggling understanding words or sentences, you tell your mom and dad. They take you to the doctor. When you are at the doctors they test your IQ, and it is above average you say HOW? They say you have auditory processing disorder.

What is auditory processing disorder? Auditory processing disorder affects the way your brain processes sound and words. You could have it from genetics or it can come from your mother giving birth to you. If your mother had trouble giving birth to you, sometimes the doctor would pull the baby out with forceps. He or she might not know the damage that the forceps did until the baby is older or is in school.

How do you know you have auditory processing disorder? Signs of APD are difficulty hearing with background noises, distracted by things around you, or poor listening skills. If you have signs of APD, you should test your IQ and visit an audiologist. An audiologist will give you a bunch of hearing and sound tests.

Can you get auditory processing disorder? The answer is yes, but it is not likely to develop. You can get it if you have severe ear infections all the time, or if you have a bad accident to your head or ear. It is more likely that boys will develop APD or have APD .

How do you treat APD? Treatment for APD is not by medication. You need to change your learning environment, go to speech therapy, and reading and writing more often helps. APD is curable and you can even grow out of it by the age of 13.

If you are worried about having APD, don’t, it is something you can learn to live with or it will go away on its own .
