For more than 100 million years sea turtles have covered vast distances across the world’s oceans, filling a vital role in the balance of marine habitats. Over the last 200 years, human activities have tipped the scales against the survival of the sea turtles who are slaughtered for their eggs, meat, skin, and shells. They also face habitat destruction and accidental capture of fishing gear. Pollution (plastic floating in the ocean) and poisonous oils are other threats they need to watch out for. To help protect sea turtle habitat you can reduce marine debris that may entangle or accidentally be eaten by sea turtles, participate in coastal clean-ups and reduce plastic use to keep our ocean and beaches clean, keep nesting beaches dark and safe for them so you don’t disorient hatchling sea turtles and discourage nesting females from coming onto the beach to lay their eggs, DO NOT disturb nests, and fill in holes an knock down sandcastles before you leave so they don’t become obstacles for the sea turtles. So, now that you know how to let us save the sea turtles and make a difference!
