Too Many Doctor Specialties
Author Name:
Elena Castro-Lopez

When I am older, I want to be a doctor, but there is one problem: there are too many doctor specialties to choose from! There are over 135 medical specialties. The most common specialty is Family Medicine and the most uncommon is Geriatrics. Geriatricians treat illnesses related to aging. Personally, I want to be a psychiatrist, oncologist, neurologist, or family medicine doctor.

A psychiatrist can diagnose and treat a wide range of mental illnesses, like depression, eating disorders, and insomnia. An oncologist is trained to investigate, diagnose, and treat an individual with cancer or suspected cancer. A neurologist is a specialist who treats diseases of the brain and spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and muscles. A family medicine doctor is the only specialist qualified to treat most ailments and provide comprehensive health care for people of all ages. I want to be a doctor because you get to help those who are sick, struggling, or in need.
