My name is Elle Lee. I am just a little chicken waiting in the chicken coop for breakfast like all the other chickens. I am smaller than the other chickens, but in the end, I am different altogether. I am the only chicken with white feathers, a long red comb, and the only one brave enough to go near a cow! All my other friends, like Lilly and Afton, are afraid and think I should be afraid of cows too. I mean what is so scary about a cow? Yes, they are big and can step on me, but they are not like dogs who run around trying to eat chickens. They are calm, cool, and collected.
I see a person who is familiar walking toward the chicken coop with a bag that says chicken feed. That is another thing that the other chickens think is weird. I CAN READ! ISN’T THAT AWSOME! I get to know what is happening in the world around me! Anyway, there is chicken food in the chicken feeder and my stomach is grumbling, my mouth is watering, and my brain is telling me to run to the chicken feed.
The farmer opens the gate about an hour later and we all run out. I was pecking the ground looking for extra chicken feed, when Afton, with Lilly by her side, says, “Elle Lee I found something cool!” We all walk back into the chicken coop and Afton shows me a shiny yellow rock. I stare at it for a long time. “What's so special about it?” I ask. Afton looks at me in shock. “Look at it! This could change our future!” Lilly starts to look at me in a way that was saying AGREE WITH MY FRIEND OR ELSE! I look at her in a taunting way, and she backs off. Even though I am tiny, I can be scary.
After a while Afton and Lilly leave, and I stare at the rock for a long time thinking about why Afton thought it was special. Then, a little girl comes out. I know her, her name is Sophie. I am her favorite chicken, and she is always there to make sure I get the extra food! But this time when she comes over, she does not come to me and instead goes to another chicken named Brody and gives him the extra chicken food! I get jealous fast and almost go up to Sophie and show her a piece of my mind. But, since I am a chicken, I cannot do that.
Afton picks up the rock and runs over to Sophie. The girl looks so happy and runs back inside her coop, at least that is what the other chickens call it. I want to be alone, so I go over to a cow and start to wonder if Afton was right, and the little gold rock really was going to change our future. Afton runs up to the cow gate avoiding the cow and says, “I TOLD YOU!” I get mad about it and say, "You don’t have to brag!” After that I find another shiny rock and throw it hard, but it does not do anything.
The farmer puts us back in the chicken coop a little while later. But, I sneak out through a tiny hole that I made earlier that day and dig a deep hole by the cow. I get surprised when I find two more shiny gold rocks. I grab the gold rocks and happily run up to the farmer’s coop and peck on the door. The farmer opens the door, looks at me, and smiles. That’s when I learn these rocks aren’t just any old rocks, they are solid gold!
A long year passes, and we find tons more gold. Afton grows her comb, and Brody and I become the best of friends. The family buys a lot of fancy stuff, upgrades the chicken coop, and fixes their house. Yes, I find out what they call it! Afton was right, it did change my future, and even better - my life as chicken went gold!
