First, what can they eat? Well, these little spikey creatures LOVE insects such as mealworms and crickets. They often eat cat food, one of my recommendations of cat food are "Blue Buffalo Healthy Living Cat Food". Its mainly better to give your prickly friend more options in their food bowl. Every 2 days, you should always refill their bowls with fresh food. You should as well always, give your hedgehog a snack every week or two. Most hedgehogs enjoy blueberries and strawberries. They also may enjoy corn and peas!

Second , what can they not eat? There are many deadly foods according to hedgehogs. Hedgehogs can NOT have any type of dairy, they're lactose intolerant and it may give them a very painful stomach ache. They as well can not have grapes, chocolate, coffee, avocadoes, and definitely, egg yolks! They do enjoy munching on eggs, just make sure you take out the yolk and don't put in milk for scrambled eggs, I highly recommend using a small amount of water and butter spray, just in case your eggs want to stick to your pan!

Next, how can you provide them a healthy life? You should always clean their cage every week or two. They have very sensitive noses due to the fact that they have very weak sight. If not, they most likely will feel nauseous due to the smell of urine and droppings, its best to give their cage a deep cleaning every weekend. Another thing hedgehogs require are baths. NEVER wash them in a sink due to the holes that they can get their feet caught in which could cause serious injuries. You should always wash them in a bath with room temperature water. Also, you should only wash them once a month for 5-10 minutes, MAXIMUM, due to the fact they could get dry skin.

Now, how should you handle them? Hedgehogs are nocturnal so you should always greet them at night, 8:00 PM at the minimum. As soon as you wake them up, you should always give them a minute to eat, drink, and go to the bathroom. After, you should wash your hands with a non-fruit-smelling soap, such as a plain Dove soap. After washing your hands and drying them completely, you need to slowly pet your hedgehog so they feel a little more comfortable, NEVER WEAR GLOVES WHILE HANDLING, they will never get used to your scent. Now, Remove all of their sleeping areas so they wont scurry back. After, slowly and gently cup your hedgehog with two hands as you slowly pet them, most of them love chin rubs. Now, try to at least give them their daily attention for 1-2 hours. After handling, put your hedgehog back in their cage. As soon as you wake up, put all of their sleeping places back in their cage. Check if their food and water bowls are at least half full, if not make sure to fill them back up with fresh food and water.
