Recently, in Turkey a tragic earthquake has destroyed more than half of the town apart. Buildings have fallen, people have been covered under the rubble, it is just devastating. Thankfully, generous people are finding and helping people every day. Some people have survived under the rubble without food or water for more than 14 days. Can you believe that? But, how do earthquakes form, you may ask? Well, I have your answer. An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. The tectonic plates are always slowly moving, but they get stuck at their edges due to friction. When the stress on the edge overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel through the earth’s crust and cause the shaking feeling that we feel. If the shaking is strong enough it can tear down buildings and cause massive destruction like it did in Turkey-Syria. People are still helping with the horrific natural disaster that occurred in Turkey-Syria to this day. We hope things will get better and people will stay unharmed.
