You have likely heard of raccoons before and they are notorious for digging through trash, but there is so much more to these amazing creatures! To start off with, raccoons have a vast and interesting diet, including frogs, insects, crayfish, plants, fish, and other freshwater animals. Raccoons are omnivores, which means they eat both meat and plants. One of the most interesting ways they hunt is when they stand on the bank of a river and scoop up fish right up out of the water! They also have opposable thumbs which allow them to crack open nuts and acorns. Raccoons are one of the only creatures who have these opposable thumbs; if you did not know humans have them, too. These masked bandits also have many predators like Florida panthers, alligators, Burmese pythons, and even humans. These days, raccoons are becoming scarce in the Everglades because of Burmese pythons, an invasive species. This is devastating because raccoons help balance pesky insect populations that harm various crops. In addition, raccoons are very adaptable and can live in different places such as various as wooded areas and urban civilizations. They tend to live by lakes and areas with many trees and agriculture. To finish off, raccoons are very fascinating animals and have unique features that distinguish them from others.
