Hello. Today I am going to talk about why you should adopt animals from shelters. Shelters can have all kinds of animals like birds and rabbits, but they mainly have dogs and cats. Shelters help animals in need and work to find all animals loving homes. Around 23% of pets come from animal shelters.
Every year around 6.5 million new animals are put in U.S. shelters, and less than half of those animals are adopted. If an animal stays in a shelter for too long, they are euthanized, which means they are put down. Each year about 1 and a half million shelter animals are euthanized. Shelters put down animals, because they don’t have enough room. However, some shelters are no-kill shelters, meaning that they keep unwanted, healthy, animals until they die or are adopted.
Adopting a pet is much, much cheaper than buying one. When you adopt a pet, the vet bills would be cheaper. Pets can’t be adopted unless they are healthy and have all their shots; so, you don’t have to pay for as many shots. Also, when you buy a pet from a pet store or breeder they can cost up to thousands of dollars, but you can adopt a pet for 50 dollars to 375 dollars. Sometimes, the shelter will give you some food or toys for your pet. If you adopt a dog, they usually have already been trained.
If you adopt a pet, you are saving a life.Have you ever heard of a puppy mill? Puppy mills are places where dogs are bred as often as possible, and their puppies are sold for money. These dogs are kept in cramped, dirty, cages all day. Once the dog can’t make any more puppies, they are killed or abandoned. The puppies and dogs in puppy mills usually have illnesses and die shortly after they are bought. Puppy mill dogs are usually sold online, in pet stores, and at flea markets. According to the Humane Society, around 10,000 puppy mills are active today, and 2.6 million puppies come from puppy mills. When you buy a dog from a pet store they could come from a puppy mill. However, when you adopt a dog, it will be socialized and healthy.
In conclusion, you should adopt animals because they are cheaper and you will save a life. Even if you can’t adopt a pet, you can volunteer at shelters and help save the animals. I hope you will agree that you should adopt pets from shelters instead of buying them.
