Did you know that soft serve is not actually ice cream? That in Australia and the United Kingdom it is called Mr. Whippy? That 7 out of 10 people would choose soft serve over ice cream? Here’s the story behind the famous, all-time favorite, soft serve ice cream: Charles Taylor from Buffalo, New York copyrighted an ice cream maker in 1916 that was the first soft serve ice cream machine. His Taylor company still makes the McDonald's ice cream machines. On Memorial Day weekend, 1934, Tom Carvel got a flat tire on his ice cream truck in Hartsdale, New York. He pulled up to parking lot and began selling melting ice cream to people passing by. Within 2 days he sold all the ice cream and thought it would be an interesting idea to sell soft desserts. In 1936 Carvel opened his first shop and made a secret soft serve recipe. Also, he made low-temperature soft serve ice cream machines. That is the interesting history of soft serve ice cream.
